Background of the Study
Humor is an essential element of communication, particularly in media formats like television talk shows, where it serves to engage audiences and convey complex social messages indirectly. In Enugu, Igbo television talk shows have increasingly incorporated humor as a pragmatic tool to address controversial issues, critique social norms, and foster audience connection (Nwankwo, 2023). The pragmatic implications of humor in this context involve the use of irony, satire, and implicit cues that require viewers to interpret meanings beyond the literal dialogue. Talk show hosts often blend traditional Igbo expressions with contemporary references, creating a hybrid form of communication that is both culturally resonant and modern. However, the rapid evolution of media and changing viewer demographics may challenge the effectiveness of these humorous strategies, leading to potential misinterpretations and diluted messages (Okafor, 2024). This study appraises the pragmatic use of humor in Igbo television talk shows by analyzing broadcast content, viewer feedback, and host interviews, with the aim of understanding how humor functions to manage social discourse and its broader implications for cultural communication.

Statement of the Problem
The use of humor in Igbo television talk shows in Enugu presents pragmatic challenges as traditional and modern humorous cues collide. The rapid shift in viewer demographics and media consumption habits may lead to misinterpretation of humorous messages, reducing their intended social commentary and engagement (Nwankwo, 2023). This discrepancy between intended and received meanings indicates a potential erosion of cultural nuance in humorous discourse, yet there is limited research examining these pragmatic implications in contemporary Igbo media (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze humorous discourse in Igbo talk shows.

  • To evaluate the pragmatic effects of humor on audience interpretation.

  • To recommend strategies for effective humorous communication.

Research Questions

  • How is humor used pragmatically in Igbo television talk shows?

  • What challenges affect its interpretation?

  • What measures can improve the pragmatic impact of humor?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the pragmatic implications of humor in Igbo television talk shows in Enugu, providing insights for media practitioners, linguists, and cultural scholars. The findings will inform strategies to enhance the clarity and cultural resonance of humorous discourse in modern media (Nwankwo, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Igbo television talk shows in Enugu and does not cover other media formats or informal discourse.

Definitions of Terms
